The urgency of an algorethics and A.I. Race Leads Tech Giants to Take Ethics Risks

 Abstract

For this week’s Learning Journal, I found two sources about AI(Artificial Intelligence) from the LIRN (Library and Information Resources Network), “The urgency of an algorethics” by Paolo Benanti and “A.I. Race Leads Tech Giants to Take Ethics Risks” by Nico Grant and Karen Weise. Both two articles are discussing about Ethics Risks of AI development. The development of AI has led to a race among tech giants to become leaders in this field. This competition has undoubtedly motivated these companies to push the boundaries of what is possible with AI, leading to new and innovative products and services. However, this race may also lead to some companies taking risks with ethical considerations in order to gain a competitive advantage.


One example of this is the use of facial recognition technology, which has raised concerns about privacy and civil liberties. Some tech giants have been criticized for developing and deploying this technology without fully considering its potential negative impact on society. Another example is the use of AI in hiring processes. While this technology has the potential to make the hiring process more efficient, it may also perpetuate biases and discrimination if not developed and deployed in an ethical manner. Therefore, it's crucial for tech giants and other companies developing AI to prioritize ethics and responsible innovation. It's essential to ensure that AI is developed and used in a way that promotes social good and avoids harm to individuals and communities. Governments and regulatory bodies can also play an essential role in setting ethical standards and guidelines for the development and deployment of AI.


The Urgency of An Algorethics

The article "The urgency of an algorithmic ethics" by Paolo Benanti reflects on the role of religions in shaping a world where AI is developed ethically and focuses on the interfaith perspective in addressing the challenges posed by AI. The author argues that human beings have always lived in a techno-human condition, which refers to the interaction with the environment through tools and technological artifacts. This condition is what sets humans apart from other animals and allows them to transcend their biological limitations. The article also highlights that technology is a sign of human surplus and that it is through technological artifacts that humans have become a global phenomenon. However, the author emphasizes the need for an algorithmic ethics that ensures the responsible development and use of AI, which is becoming increasingly present in our daily lives. The Rome Call for AI Ethics, signed by tech companies, governments, and religious leaders, commits signatories to follow principles of transparency, inclusion, accountability, impartiality, reliability, security, and privacy. The author suggests that an interfaith approach to AI ethics could provide guidance for humanity's search for meaning in the new era of AI.


In addition, the evolution of language technology has had a profound impact on human history. The development of spoken language allowed humans to communicate with one another and share ideas, leading to the development of cultures and civilizations. The emergence of written language enabled humans to record their ideas and thoughts, creating a permanent record of knowledge that could be passed down from generation to generation. Over time, the written language evolved, and new technologies were developed to make it easier to reproduce and distribute written works. The printing press, invented in the 15th century, revolutionized the dissemination of knowledge, making it possible to produce books and other written materials on a large scale. This development had a significant impact on the spread of ideas and information and paved the way for the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment. As the written language evolved, so did the tools used to analyze and interpret it. The development of computers and AI has led to the creation of new forms of language technology, such as machine translation, natural language processing, and speech recognition. These tools have made it easier to communicate across linguistic barriers and have opened up new possibilities for research and innovation. The evolution of language technology has also had social and cultural implications. The way we communicate and the language we use reflects our cultural norms and values. As new forms of technology emerge, they can challenge traditional ways of communicating and lead to new forms of cultural expression.


Moreover, the passage discusses the revolutionary impact of computers and information technology on human society and its capabilities. It highlights the two major events that were made possible by the advent of computers - landing on the moon and the creation of the atomic bomb. The author emphasizes that the ability to solve complex mathematical equations using computers made these events possible. However, the passage also warns of the risks and limitations associated with the use of technology. The author argues that an ethical approach is needed to ensure responsible use of technology and its benefits. The passage also discusses the challenges and opportunities presented by the development of artificial intelligence and the increasing role of machines in human society.


A.I. Race Leads Tech Giants to Take Ethics Risks

The article discusses the ethics risks posed by the race among tech giants like Google and Microsoft to develop generative artificial intelligence (A.I.) technology, which is behind powerful chatbots. The aggressive moves by these companies to develop and release chatbots were driven by a race to control the next big thing in technology. However, some employees and ethicists within the companies raised concerns that the A.I. technology behind these chatbots could generate inaccurate and dangerous statements, flood social media with disinformation, degrade critical thinking, and erode the factual foundation of modern society. Despite these concerns, the companies released their chatbots anyway. The article also highlights the tensions between the industry's worriers and risk-takers regarding the safety and ethical implications of A.I. technology. Regulators are already threatening to intervene, and some have proposed legislation to regulate A.I. development.


Synthesis

The two articles both discuss the potential ethics risks of AI development. The development of AI has led to a race among tech giants to become leaders in this field, which has led to some companies taking risks with ethical considerations to gain a competitive advantage. Examples of this include the use of facial recognition technology and AI in hiring processes, which could perpetuate biases and discrimination if not developed and deployed in an ethical manner. The article by Benanti emphasizes the need for an algorithmic ethics that ensures the responsible development and use of AI, while the article by Grant and Weise highlights the tensions between the industry's worriers and risk-takers regarding the safety and ethical implications of A.I. technology. The articles both suggest that prioritizing ethics and responsible innovation is crucial to ensure that AI is developed and used in a way that promotes social good and avoids harm to individuals and communities. I do agree that as AI technology becomes more advanced and ubiquitous, it is essential that we prioritize ethics and responsible innovation in its development and use. AI has the potential to bring about significant benefits to society, but it also poses many risks and challenges that need to be addressed to ensure that it is used for the greater good. However, it is not such a thing just tell people “Hey, do not break the rule!”. Prioritizing ethics in AI means considering the potential impacts of AI systems on individuals, communities, and society as a whole. This includes ensuring that AI systems are designed and used in a way that respects human rights, promotes fairness and equality, and does not reinforce or exacerbate existing biases and discrimination. Responsible innovation in AI also requires transparency, accountability, and stakeholder engagement throughout the development process. This means involving diverse stakeholders, including experts in ethics, social sciences, and humanities, in the design and development of AI systems to ensure that they are aligned with social values and goals.


In short, prioritizing ethics and responsible innovation in AI is crucial for ensuring that AI is developed and used in a way that benefits society as a whole and avoids harm to individuals and communities. It is important for all stakeholders involved in AI development and deployment to take this responsibility seriously and work together to ensure that AI is used for the greater good.

Evan Gershkovich and Russia, the Country That Turned on Him

 Abstract

For this week’s reading and discussion, I decided to read a brief story of a brave journalist, Evan Gershkovich, who shows high dedication spirit to his job. I am sorry to hear about Evan Gershkovich's arrest in Russia because he is one of the brave people who stand in front of us and doing the amazing things for us.


Evan Gershkovich is a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, where he covers Russia, Ukraine and the former Soviet Union. In March 2023, he was arrested in Russia while on a reporting trip and accused of espionage, making him the first American journalist detained in Russia on such charges since the Cold War(Parkinson & Hinshaw, 2023). The Journal vehemently denies the allegations. President Biden and news organizations around the world have joined the Journal in calling for Mr. Gershkovich’s immediate release(Parkinson & Hinshaw, 2023). Mr. Gershkovich, the American son of Soviet-born Jewish exiles, grew up in New Jersey. He graduated from Bowdoin College, a liberal-arts school in Maine, in 2014. Before joining the Journal in January 2022, Mr. Gershkovich was a reporter for Agence France-Presse and the Moscow Times. He was also a news assistant at the New York Times.


Evan Gershkovich Loved Russia, the Country That Turned on Him

In March 2023, Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal who covers Russia, Ukraine, and the former Soviet Union, was arrested in Russia on charges of espionage, making him the first American journalist detained in Russia on such charges since the Cold War(Parkinson & Hinshaw, 2023). The Journal denies the allegations, and President Biden and news organizations around the world have called for his immediate release. Gershkovich, who grew up in New Jersey, graduated from Bowdoin College in 2014 and previously worked as a reporter for Agence France-Presse and the Moscow Times and as a news assistant at the New York Times. The actual reason for Evan Gershkovich's arrest in Russia is not clear, but he has been accused of espionage, which the Journal and the US government strongly deny. It's important to note that espionage accusations against journalists in Russia are not uncommon and are often used as a pretext to silence critical reporting.


Journalism & Politics 

The arrest of Evan Gershkovich has drawn widespread condemnation from news organizations and political leaders around the world, who see it as a violation of press freedom and an attempt to silence independent journalism. The accusation of espionage against Gershkovich appears to be unfounded, and many believe that his arrest is politically motivated. The situation highlights the dangers that journalists face in some countries when reporting on sensitive topics, and the need to protect press freedom and the rights of journalists to report without fear of retribution or persecution. It also underscores the important role that journalists play in providing information to the public and holding those in power accountable for their actions.


Independent Journalism and Freedom

While the story of Evan Gershkovich's arrest is concerning and highlights the risks journalists face in their work, it can also serve as a reminder of the importance of independent journalism and the need to protect press freedom. However, it is important to keep in mind that every situation is unique and it is impossible to predict or prevent every possible danger or risk that journalists may face. Therefore, while it can be informative to follow news stories like this one, it is equally important to prioritize safety and take precautions when reporting in potentially risky situations.


Conclusion

Although it's unclear whether Evan Gershkovich's arrest is directly related to Russia's politics and its invasion of Ukraine, the exact reasons for his arrest and the accusations of espionage against him have not been made public, and it's difficult to speculate without more information. However, it's possible that his reporting on Russia, Ukraine, and the former Soviet Union may have drawn unwanted attention and scrutiny from Russian authorities, especially given the tense political climate in the region. The tense political climate in the region refers to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has been ongoing since 2014. The conflict has strained the relationship between the two countries and has led to heightened tensions and suspicions on both sides. Sustainable Agriculture

 Sustainable Agriculture

Sustainable agriculture is an environmentally, economically, and socially responsible farming system that promotes good stewardship of natural systems and resources, contributes to local economies, and prioritizes people and communities over corporate interests. Sustainable agriculture practices include crop rotation, planting cover crops and perennials, reducing or eliminating tillage, applying integrated pest management, integrating livestock and crops, adopting agroforestry practices, and managing whole systems and landscapes. These practices focus on soil health and diversification, and research shows they can be productive and profitable. Agroecology is the science of managing farms as ecosystems, and crop breeding research is crucial to the success of a sustainable agroecological system. I believe that smart public policies can help farmers make the transition to sustainable agriculture.


Dirty Water, Degraded Soil

The report discusses the environmental and economic costs of the dominant Midwest farming system that produces only two commodities, corn, and soybeans, and the benefits of adopting a diverse crop rotation system. The author suggests that modified cropping systems such as diversifying crops, adding cover crops, and reducing tillage can enhance yields and profits while reducing pollution and providing environmental benefits. The report also suggests that adopting a diverse crop rotation system in the 25 Iowa counties with the most erodible soils could reduce soil erosion by 91% and save taxpayers and downstream communities $196 million to $198 million per year in surface water cleanup costs. Moreover, the farmers need support from state and federal policies, such as technical assistance, incentives, and multi-state pilot projects, to adopt these practices on a large scale.


Climate Change

Climate change is already beginning to have severe impacts on agriculture, such as changing precipitation patterns, floods, droughts, and new pests, pathogens, and weed problems. These impacts can result in crop failures, livestock losses, increased food prices, and greater food insecurity. The current industrial model of agriculture, which relies on monoculture cropping systems, synthetic fertilizers, and minimal biodiversity, makes US farms more vulnerable to these impacts. These practices leave soils low in organic matter and prevent the formation of deep, complex root systems, which reduces water-holding capacity and increases vulnerability to erosion and water pollution.


The implementation of science-based farming practices is necessary to make farms more resilient to climate impacts. This includes practices such as increasing biodiversity, reducing tillage, and implementing cover cropping to increase organic matter in the soil. Farmers should also choose crop varieties and animal breeds that are well-suited to changing local conditions. Policymakers must shift federal agriculture investments to support and accelerate this transition to sustainable farming practices. Additionally, communities impacted by climate change must have a voice in shaping adaptation strategies, and support systems need to be in place to help them cope and recover from climate impacts. Sustainable agriculture practices, such as the use of cover crops and integrated crop/livestock management, can help build resilience to climate change by building soil health, conserving water, and reducing the need for chemical inputs. Policies and tools that support sustainable agriculture, such as conservation programs and technical assistance, can help farmers adopt these practices and build resilience to climate change.


Methods for Sustainable Agriculture

To summarize, the methods for sustainable agriculture include reducing plowing, protecting soil with cover crops and complex crop rotations, incorporating deep-rooted plants, increasing biodiversity with uncultivated "prairie strips" and integrated crop/livestock management, and using science-based practices to make agriculture more resilient and adaptable to climate challenges. These practices aim to mirror and nurture the complexity of natural systems and reduce the need for chemical inputs while rebuilding healthy soils and maintaining a productive farm ecosystem.


Sustainable Agriculture in Taiwan
Taiwan has a diverse and relatively small-scale agricultural sector, with many small and medium-sized farms. Therefore, practices that promote biodiversity, reduce chemical inputs, and improve soil health, such as cover cropping, crop rotation, and integrated crop-livestock management, could work well in Taiwan. Additionally, practices that conserve water, such as drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting, could be particularly important in Taiwan due to its frequent droughts and limited water resources. 


Taiwan is also known for its tea production, and agroforestry practices, which involve integrating trees and shrubs into agricultural systems, could be well-suited for tea plantations. Agroforestry has been shown to improve soil health, increase biodiversity, and reduce erosion, and it can also provide additional income streams through timber and non-timber forest products. Overall, the key is to promote practices that are tailored to the unique needs and challenges of Taiwan's agricultural sector, while also promoting sustainability and resilience in the face of climate change and other challenges.


Prairie Strips

One new thing I learned from the methods for sustainable agriculture is the concept of "prairie strips." According to the article, uncultivated prairie strips are a type of sustainable agriculture practice that increase biodiversity and keep the farm ecosystem healthy. These strips consist of native perennial plants that provide habitat for wildlife and pollinators, improve soil health, and reduce erosion. This method is particularly interesting because it recognizes the value of native plant species in supporting agricultural ecosystems. Instead of relying solely on crops, incorporating prairie strips can help to maintain a diverse set of plant and animal species that support the health and productivity of the farm.

Additionally, prairie strips can provide multiple benefits beyond agriculture, such as carbon sequestration and flood control. Renewable Energy in Taiwan

 What Is Renewable Energy

Renewable energy refers to energy that is generated from natural resources that are replenished naturally and sustainably over a short period of time. These resources include sunlight, wind, rain, tides, and geothermal heat. Renewable energy is considered as a clean and sustainable alternative to traditional sources of energy such as coal, oil, and natural gas which are finite and have a negative impact on the environment. 


Renewable energy technologies such as solar panels, wind turbines, hydroelectric dams, and geothermal plants are becoming increasingly popular as they are often more cost-effective and environmentally friendly compared to traditional energy sources. They do not emit harmful pollutants or greenhouse gases and do not contribute to climate change. Therefore, renewable energy is seen as an important tool in the transition towards a more sustainable and resilient energy system.


There are several types of renewable energy sources that are available, including:


i. Solar energy

This refers to energy that is harnessed from the sun through the use of solar panels or photovoltaic cells.


ii. Wind energy

This is energy that is generated from the kinetic energy of wind turbines.


iii. Hydroelectric energy

This is energy that is generated from the potential energy of falling or flowing water through hydroelectric dams.


iv. Geothermal energy

This refers to energy that is harnessed from the Earth's heat, typically through geothermal power plants or geothermal heat pumps.


v. Biomass energy

This is energy that is generated from organic matter, such as wood, crops, and waste.


vi. Tidal energy

This is energy that is generated from the kinetic energy of tidal currents.


All of these renewable energy sources have the potential to provide clean and sustainable energy, and their usage can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate the impacts of climate change.


Nuclear Energy

Notice that, nuclear fusion and nuclear fission are not considered renewable energy sources in the same way as solar, wind, and hydroelectric power. Nuclear fission involves splitting heavy atomic nuclei to release energy. Although nuclear fission does not emit greenhouse gases during operation, it produces radioactive waste that remains hazardous for thousands of years. Furthermore, nuclear fuel is a finite resource and is not considered a renewable energy source. Nuclear fusion, on the other hand, involves combining light atomic nuclei to release energy. Nuclear fusion has the potential to provide a nearly limitless supply of clean energy, and it does not produce long-lasting radioactive waste. However, nuclear fusion technology is still in development, and commercial reactors have not yet been built. Therefore, while nuclear energy (both fission and fusion) can be a low-carbon source of energy, it is not generally considered a renewable energy source.


Nuclear Fusion

Nuclear fusion is the process by which the sun and other stars generate energy. In the sun's core, hydrogen nuclei combine to form helium in a series of fusion reactions, releasing vast amounts of energy in the process. Nuclear fusion has the potential to provide a nearly limitless supply of clean energy, as it uses light atomic nuclei such as hydrogen and helium that are abundant on Earth. Unlike nuclear fission, which produces radioactive waste that remains hazardous for thousands of years, nuclear fusion produces only small amounts of short-lived radioactive isotopes.


However, achieving practical nuclear fusion on Earth has proven to be a significant technological challenge. Scientists are still working to develop and commercialize fusion reactors that can produce more energy than they consume and operate at a sustained level. If successful, nuclear fusion could be a game-changer for the world's energy system, providing a nearly limitless source of clean and sustainable energy.


Therefore, I choose solar energy and wind energy as my topic since solar energy is associate with the sun(nuclear fusion) and wind energy is associate with Taiwan(Of the world's top 20 offshore wind farms, 16 are in Taiwan Strait).


Solar Energy | Pros & Cons


i. Renewable

Solar energy is a renewable source of energy. The sun is an abundant source of energy, and its energy is constantly replenished. Unlike fossil fuels, which are finite and will eventually run out, solar energy is always available.


ii. Environmentally friendly

Solar energy is a clean and green source of energy that does not produce any harmful emissions or pollutants. It helps reduce our dependence on non-renewable sources of energy and contributes to a cleaner environment.


iii. Cost-effective

While the initial investment in solar panels may seem expensive, the long-term benefits of solar energy far outweigh the costs. Once you have installed solar panels, you can enjoy free electricity for years to come.


iv. Energy independence

Solar energy can help you become energy independent by generating your own electricity. This means you will not be dependent on the grid for your power needs and will have greater control over your energy costs.


v. Low maintenance

Solar panels require very little maintenance, making them a hassle-free investment. With proper installation, you can expect your solar panels to last for decades.


vi. Versatile

Solar energy can be used for a variety of applications, from powering homes and businesses to providing electricity in remote areas. It can also be used to heat water and power vehicles.


While solar energy has many benefits, it also has some drawbacks that should be considered:


i. Weather-dependent

Solar energy relies on the sun's radiation, which means it is weather-dependent. On cloudy or rainy days, solar panels may not generate as much energy as they would on a sunny day.


ii. High upfront costs

The initial cost of installing solar panels can be high, which may be a barrier for some people. However, the long-term savings on energy bills can make up for the initial cost over time.


iii. Land use

Large-scale solar installations can take up a significant amount of land, which may not be feasible in densely populated areas.


iv. Energy storage

Solar energy can be generated during the day, but energy storage is required to use it at night or during periods of low sunlight. This can add to the cost of the system.


v. Materials and manufacturing

The production of solar panels requires rare materials and can be energy-intensive, which may have environmental impacts.


vi. Aesthetics: Some people may not like the look of solar panels on their roofs or in their neighborhoods.


Overall, while solar energy has many benefits, it also has some drawbacks that should be considered before making an investment. Advances in technology and research are continually addressing these issues to make solar energy more accessible and efficient for everyone.



Wind Energy | Pros & Cons


Wind energy is a renewable source of energy that is generated by wind turbines. Here are some benefits of wind energy:


i. Clean and renewable

Wind energy is a clean and green source of energy that does not produce any harmful emissions or pollutants. It helps reduce our dependence on non-renewable sources of energy and contributes to a cleaner environment.


ii. Cost-effective

Wind energy can be a cost-effective source of energy. While the upfront cost of building wind turbines can be significant, the long-term savings on energy bills can make up for the initial cost over time.


iii. Abundant

Wind energy is abundant in many parts of the world, and its availability is not affected by weather or environmental conditions.


iv. Job creation

Wind energy creates jobs in manufacturing, construction, and operations. It also supports local economies by providing a reliable source of energy.


v. Land use

Wind turbines can be built on land that is not suitable for agriculture or other uses. This means they can provide a source of income for farmers and landowners without affecting their primary activities.


vi. Energy independence

Wind energy can help communities become more energy independent by generating their own electricity. This means they will not be dependent on the grid for their power needs and will have greater control over their energy costs.


While wind energy has many benefits, it also has some drawbacks that should be considered:

Wind & Solar Energy in Taiwan
Both wind and solar energy have great potential in Taiwan, as the country has abundant wind and solar resources. However, the specific mix of renewable energy sources that would be best for Taiwan depends on a number of factors, including the local climate, topography, and energy demand. Taiwan is an island nation that is frequently hit by typhoons and other extreme weather events, which means that wind energy can play a significant role in the country's energy mix. The offshore wind energy potential in Taiwan is particularly high, with strong and consistent winds blowing along the western coast. The government has set a target of reaching 15 GW of installed offshore wind capacity by 2035, which would make Taiwan a leader in the global offshore wind market.


At the same time, solar energy has great potential in Taiwan, with high levels of solar irradiation throughout the country. Rooftop solar panels can be installed on homes and businesses to generate clean energy, and large-scale solar projects can be developed in open areas such as farmland or industrial zones. I believe a mix of wind and solar energy would likely be the best option for Taiwan, as it would provide a reliable and diverse source of renewable energy. This would help the country reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.



The WWF Energy Report: by 2050, we could get all the energy we need from renewable sources

The statement that "by 2050, we could get all the energy we need from renewable sources" is a bold and ambitious goal that is certainly achievable with the right policies and investments in renewable energy. Renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind, and geothermal are becoming increasingly cost-competitive with fossil fuels, and their deployment is accelerating around the world. In many cases, renewable energy is already cheaper than fossil fuels, and this trend is expected to continue as technology improves and economies of scale are achieved. However, achieving a 100% renewable energy system will require significant changes to our energy infrastructure and systems, as well as strong political leadership and public support. It will also require significant investment in energy storage technologies to address the intermittency of renewable energy sources.


Despite these challenges, the transition to a 100% renewable energy system is not only technically feasible but also necessary to address the urgent challenge of climate change. The WWF Energy Report highlights the enormous potential of renewable energy to provide clean, affordable, and reliable energy to all people while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and creating new jobs and economic opportunities. Overall, while achieving 100% renewable energy by 2050 will require significant effort and investment, it is an achievable goal that will bring enormous benefits to society and the planet.
